Treatment
Working Title:
‘It’s Okay, Not to Be Okay’
Synopsis / Format:
My Radio show will be hosted by a presenter who will be interviewing guests on the subject of mental health. It will be a Chat show that will explore into how mental health can affect people and how they cope with it. Although, I want the Radio show to have a relaxed environment and less interview and more of just a “Chit-Chat” giving us valuable and truthful answers. The show will be 10 to 15 minutes long including interviews, stories and opinions.
Intended Audience:
Teens – Parents (16-50).
Style:
The show will attempt to be fast paced. It will be serious but interesting to keep the audience engaged, my show influences follow a very similar format as this appeals to my target audience and as for the older audience it will give of the style of how teens/young adults act.
Institution:
The Mid-Day Show will be broadcasted on an OFCOM regulated radio station called Switch Radio, which focus on entertaining and informing the local public in the area the company is located.
Deadlines:
All radio work needs to be complete by the deadline on the 5th of December. I intend to stay by this deadline and complete the project in this time frame.

Article
In 2018 NHS Digital found that around 2,000 under 18s in the West Midlands were being referred for mental health treatments. So why is it that the children of the UK are struggling with their mental health and what can we do about it?
We spoke to Kahhar Miah, an 18-year-old who has been suffering with the symptoms of insomnia since he was 15, about his experience living with the condition. Insomnia is a condition which causes someone difficulty falling and or staying asleep and can cause a lack of concentration, fatigue and mood swings. This condition is 1 of 200 that are officially recognized as mental disorders which are effecting 1 in 4 of the general UK public. When asked if he had ever sought out treatment or support he told us that he felt it was a problem he had to deal with himself and that nobody he could reach out too could do anything to help. This consensus of fighting your battles alone seems to extend back generations and may contribute to only 13% of all people dealing with a mental illness in the UK getting treatment in 2017.
Currently there are many independent locally based charities like Mind and Pause that provide therapy, community hubs and crisis lines for free with an emphasis on easy access for under 25 year olds. There are around 130 Minds in England and Wales whose staff and volunteers help those in need of support, like Kahhar, to face their struggles with someone by their side.

Evaluation
I feel the main strength of our piece was our research as it was relevant, extensive and featured heavily in the final product. The main negative is the sound quality, it is slightly echoey because we had to record in a main classroom due to the radio studio being unavailable. I have learnt that when recording audio someone should have in earphones so that if something is picked up on the recording you will know immediately and be able to work around it as opposed to finding out in post-production when it is too late to change. This radio project gave me great practice in sound recording skills that I had never really done before, specifically in the recording department. I now know how and why to combat things like echoing and background noise. I feel our piece full filled the brief. Our idea appeals to a young audience, is very topical and has local features via the drop-in services mentioned. Compared to a professional standard audio piece mine was echoey and didn’t have an expert guest which would be a must have in a professional environment. Although it wasn’t through not trying my piece didn’t have an expert from the charities mentioned. If I were to do this project again I would start the recording process sooner, so I have time to re-record and improve.
